cobalt is the most important and most widely used drier metal of all. it is primarily an oxidation catalyst and as such acts as a surface drier. strong surface drying promoter, through drying, is poor. less discoloration upon drying.

Auxiliary drier. Reduces Cobalt dosage required and hence lowers risk of discoloration. Promotes through drying and avoids wrinkling.

One drier is not enough to obtain uniform drying, The addition of a through drier into the paint is always necessary along with the primary drier. Thus, the manufacturers of driers have developed combination driers. It is a mixture of primary, through and auxiliary driers that provide uniform and fast drying. It also reduces the chance of batch variation. The exact dosage and ratio depend on the composition of the paint and desired properties and application conditions.
